HOOKUniq FAQs

Electric bicycle conversion kit, e-bike conversion kit and indoor trainer

01What is the HOOKUniq electric bicycle conversion kit?

HOOKUniq is a detachable electric bicycle conversion kit that adds electric assistance to a compatible bicycle. The motor, built-in battery and mounting clamps are combined in one unit. With the correct rear-wheel setup, HOOKUniq can also be used as an indoor cycle trainer.

02How does HOOKUniq add electric assistance to my bicycle?

HOOKUniq uses a friction-drive roller that presses against the bicycle tyre to help turn the wheel. It can attach to the front or rear wheel of a compatible bicycle. You must start by pedalling before electric assistance becomes available. This friction drive e-bike kit is designed to provide electric assist for bicycles without replacing the bicycle itself.

03Why choose an electric bicycle conversion kit instead of a new e-bike?

An electric bike conversion kit lets you add electric assistance to a compatible bicycle you already own, instead of replacing the whole bicycle. HOOKUniq is detachable, so you can remove it for charging, storage or riding without the kit.

04How much does HOOKUniq weigh, including the battery?

The complete HOOKUniq unit weighs approximately 5.5 kg, including the built-in battery.

05What is included in the HOOKUniq box?

The standard box includes one HOOKUniq drive unit with its built-in battery, 2 mounting clamps, one charger, one thumb throttle, one wireless module, one drawstring bag, one microfibre cloth and the owner's manual.

06Do I need to replace my bicycle wheel or drivetrain to fit HOOKUniq?

No. HOOKUniq is designed for tool-free, plug-and-play installation without replacing your bicycle's wheel or drivetrain. Your bicycle must still meet the compatibility and safety requirements. Some mudguards may need to be adjusted or removed to leave enough space for the unit. This makes HOOKUniq an easy-to-install e-bike conversion kit for compatible bicycles.

07Which bicycles are compatible with HOOKUniq?

HOOKUniq is designed for road, hybrid, mountain and cargo bicycles with standard tyres. Compatibility depends on your bicycle's wheel size, tyre width and available mounting space.

Check compatibility with HOOK before buying. A mountain bike that fits the kit is not automatically suitable for jumps or extreme off-road riding; check your intended use with HOOK.

08What wheel sizes and tyre widths fit HOOKUniq?

Wheel diameter: 24-29 inches. Tyre width: 0.40-2.40 inches.

Your bicycle must also have enough space for HOOKUniq to mount securely without interfering with the brakes, spokes or other moving parts. Confirm HOOKUniq compatibility with HOOK before buying.

09Is HOOKUniq compatible with disc brakes and rim brakes?

HOOKUniq is designed to work with both disc and rim brakes, subject to a compatibility check. The unit, roller and clamps must stay clear of the brakes, cables, hoses, spokes and other moving parts. Both bicycle brakes must work properly before every ride.

10Can I fit HOOKUniq to a carbon frame or suspension fork?

These setups may be suitable, but each bicycle needs a compatibility check. Do not assume every carbon frame, carbon fork or suspension design will fit. Confirm the mounting arrangement with HOOK before installation, and do not overtighten the clamps.

11Can I use HOOKUniq on a cargo bicycle, and what is the weight limit?

HOOKUniq can be used on a compatible cargo bicycle after its fit has been checked. The maximum combined weight of the rider and cargo is 120 kg, not 120 kg of cargo in addition to the rider. You must also stay within your bicycle manufacturer's load limits.

12Will bicycle mudguards or fenders interfere with HOOKUniq?

Some mudguards or fenders can obstruct the product and may need adjustment or removal. Do not install HOOKUniq if a mudguard, brake component or other part prevents the clamps from locking fully or the roller from aligning safely.

13Can I use the same HOOKUniq kit on more than one bicycle?

Yes, provided each bicycle is compatible. Check the fit, installation and pre-ride safety requirements every time you move the kit. The same mounting settings may not suit every bicycle, so confirm any bicycle-specific requirements with HOOK.

14How long does it take to install HOOKUniq?

After the initial setup, HOOKUniq can be attached in under 2 minutes. First-time fitting, control setup and safety checks take longer. Before riding, always check that the clamps are locked and the roller is correctly aligned.

15How do I install HOOKUniq on my bicycle?

Switch HOOKUniq off and support your bicycle on level ground. Align the roller with the centre of the tyre and position the clamps as shown in the manual. Lock the clamps, check tyre contact and make sure all parts have enough clearance. Turn the wheel by hand and check that the unit is secure. Follow the full installation instructions in the owner's manual.

16How do I remove the HOOKUniq conversion kit?

Release the hirth-lock, then unlock HOOKUniq using the HOOK app or by placing the wireless module on the unit.

Keep HOOKUniq switched on while using the button on top of the handle. Press the unit down while pressing this button, then pull it out.

Keep your fingers clear of moving parts and never force a locked unit. See the owner's manual for the full removal instructions.

17What should I check before riding with HOOKUniq?

Check both brakes, tyre condition and pressure, locked clamps, roller alignment and clearance. Make sure the throttle and control connection work correctly, and your lights and reflectors are ready. Do not ride if you notice unusual noise, smell or heat, or if any safety check fails. Resolve the problem before riding.

18Can HOOKUniq start from a standstill using only the throttle?

No. You must pedal to get the bicycle moving first. The thumb throttle becomes active only after the system detects movement started by pedalling. The cycle assist cannot move the bicycle from a standstill.

19Do I need to keep pedalling when using HOOKUniq?

Yes. You must keep pedalling to receive electric assistance, even when using the thumb throttle. Assistance stops automatically when you stop pedalling, apply the brakes or reach 25 km/h.

20What is HOOKUniq's maximum assisted speed?

HOOKUniq provides motor assistance up to 25 km/h. This is the assistance limit, not a substitute for your bicycle brakes. Do not modify the controller, firmware or other components to bypass this limit.

21What is the motor power of HOOKUniq?

HOOKUniq has a motor rated at 250 W continuous power and 750 W peak power. Peak power is available for short periods and is not the motor's continuous rating. The maximum assisted speed still remains 25 km/h.

22What is HOOKUniq's range on a full charge?

HOOKUniq's typical range is 40-50 km per charge. Actual range varies with rider and cargo weight, assist mode, throttle use, hills, tyre pressure, stops and starts, temperature, wind and wet-weather grip. The stated range is not a guaranteed distance for every ride.

23Can I still pedal if the HOOKUniq battery runs out?

Yes. You can keep pedalling when the battery runs out or you choose not to use assistance. You can also remove HOOKUniq and ride without the kit. Keeping the unit attached while switched off may add resistance, so do not assume it will be completely drag-free.

24Does HOOKUniq support regenerative charging?

HOOKUniq supports regeneration, with a stated regenerative capability of 15-18%. For normal battery charging, use the supplied charger or a replacement approved by HOOK.

25Can I increase HOOKUniq's speed limit or change the motor settings?

No. Do not bypass the 25 km/h assistance limit or change the firmware, controller, motor or battery settings. Unauthorised changes can make riding unsafe, affect the bicycle's legal classification and affect warranty coverage.

26Is HOOKUniq waterproof, and can I ride it in the rain?

HOOKUniq is designed for light-to-moderate rain, not submersion. HOOK has internally tested its IP65 protection; this is not independent IP65 certification. Avoid torrential rain, thunderstorms, flooded roads and standing water. Never clean the unit with a hose or pressure washer.

27What should I do if the drive roller slips in wet weather?

Reduce your speed and stop safely if the slipping continues. Check the tyre and roller for wear, correct alignment and secure clamp engagement. Dry the tyre and roller before continuing when needed. Do not try to stop slipping by overtightening the clamps. Make sure you increase your pedalling effort in rain while using the product.

28What safety equipment should I use when riding with HOOKUniq?

Wear a properly fitted helmet and suitable protective gear. Your bicycle should have working brakes, lights and reflectors. Follow local traffic rules and practise using assistance in a quiet, open area before riding in traffic. Leave more braking distance, especially in rain or when carrying cargo.

29What should I do if assistance continues after I stop pedalling or brake?

Bring the bicycle to a safe stop immediately and switch HOOKUniq off. Contact HOOK before riding again. The motor should not keep assisting after you stop pedalling or apply the brakes.

30What should I do if HOOKUniq is damaged, unusually hot, smoking or burning?

Stop using the unit if it is damaged or shows unusual heat, swelling, leakage, smell or noise. Do not charge it; contact HOOK. If it is smoking or burning, do not touch or carry it. Move people away, call the emergency services if needed and, if you have been trained and it is safe to do so, use a suitable fire extinguisher.

31What battery does HOOKUniq use?

HOOKUniq has a built-in NMC lithium-ion battery rated at 36 V nominal, 7 Ah and 252 Wh. Its battery management system protects against overcharging, excessive discharge, excess current and short circuits.

32Can I remove or swap the HOOKUniq battery myself?

No. The battery is fixed inside HOOKUniq and is not user-removable. Charge the complete unit through its charging port. Do not open the housing or try to swap the battery. Unauthorised access voids the warranty.

33How do I charge HOOKUniq?

Switch HOOKUniq off, and you can remove it from the bicycle or keep it attached when charging. Place it on a stable, non-flammable surface in a dry, ventilated area. Make sure the charging port and plug are dry, then connect the charger to HOOKUniq before plugging the charger into the wall socket. Disconnect in reverse order after charging.

34How long does the HOOKUniq battery take to charge?

A full charge from 0% to 100% takes approximately 3.5-4 hours with the specified 42 V DC, 2 A charger. Use only the supplied charger or a HOOK-approved replacement. Matching voltage and current ratings on an unapproved charger do not make it safe to use.

35Can I use a third-party or fast charger with HOOKUniq?

No. Use only the supplied charger or a replacement expressly approved by HOOK for this battery and connector. Do not use a generic, third-party or faster charger unless HOOK has approved it, even if its specifications appear similar.

36Can I charge HOOKUniq overnight or outdoors?

Charge in a dry, ventilated area between 0°C and 45°C, where you can monitor the unit. Do not leave it unattended for long periods, cover the unit or charger, or charge near flammable materials. Never charge in the rain or where water can enter the charger or charging port.

37Does the HOOK app work on iPhone and Android?

The HOOK app supports iPhone (iOS) and Android. Use the official app download links provided by HOOK.

38What can I do with the HOOK app?

Use the HOOK app to choose an assist mode and view your ride speed, duration and distance. You can also access indoor cycling and indoor trainer functions, check battery information and install firmware updates. HOOKUniq records total distance travelled and keeps diagnostic information for troubleshooting.

39How do I connect HOOKUniq to the controls and app?

Switch HOOKUniq on. Move the wireless module to the handlebar, secure the thumb throttle and connect it to the wireless module. Switch the wireless module on and wait for its blue connection light. Open the HOOK app, log in and follow the pairing instructions. Complete the first-ride checks away from traffic.

40What happens if HOOKUniq loses its wireless control connection?

Motor assistance is designed to stop if the connection between HOOKUniq and the handlebar wireless module or throttle is lost. Keep pedalling, move to a safe place and reconnect before using assistance again. This refers to the control connection, not necessarily a lost connection between your phone and HOOKUniq.

41How do I update HOOKUniq's firmware?

Firmware updates are delivered through the HOOK app over Wi-Fi. Update only while parked and with enough battery charge. Never start an update while riding. Follow the app's instructions and contact HOOK if an update does not finish normally.

42Can I use HOOKUniq as an indoor cycle trainer?

Yes. Mount HOOKUniq on the rear wheel, place the bicycle on a suitable heavy-duty cycle stand and select a trainer mode in the HOOK app. Make sure the bicycle and stand are secure before starting. Indoor training requires this rear-wheel setup, not front-wheel mounting.

43Is an indoor-training stand included with HOOKUniq?

No. The standard HOOKUniq package does not include a stand. You will need a suitable heavy-duty cycle stand for indoor training.

44How many resistance levels does Manual Trainer mode offer?

Manual Trainer mode offers 10 resistance levels, which you can adjust through the HOOK app during your workout.

45Is HOOKUniq compatible with Zwift, MyWhoosh and similar apps?

Smart Trainer mode is designed to work with Zwift, MyWhoosh and other compatible FTMS training apps. Select Smart Trainer in the HOOK app, disconnect the HOOK app's Bluetooth connection, then pair HOOKUniq with your chosen training app. Set up its speed and resistance functions as instructed. Check HOOK's supported-app guidance for your device and app version.

46Are third-party training app subscriptions included?

No. HOOKUniq does not include subscriptions to third-party training apps. Compatibility with an app does not mean its paid features are included.

47How do I clean and maintain HOOKUniq?

Switch the unit off and disconnect the charger before cleaning. Wipe the unit and clamps weekly with the supplied microfibre cloth, lightly dampened if needed, and inspect the throttle cable. Each month, check clamp engagement, roller wear and bicycle brake-pad wear. Do not use hoses, pressure washers, solvents or abrasive cleaners. Fully dry the charging port before charging. Find authorised service centre details on the HOOK website.

48How should I store HOOKUniq when it is not in use?

Clean and dry the unit, charge the battery to roughly 50%, and store it indoors between -10°C and 35°C. Keep it away from direct sunlight, heaters and hot vehicles. During long-term storage, check the battery periodically and avoid leaving it fully charged or empty for long periods.

49Should I remove HOOKUniq when parking or transporting my bicycle?

Remove HOOKUniq before folding your bicycle, carrying it on a car rack or leaving it unattended in public for long periods. Carry and store the detached unit securely. The drawstring bag is for carrying and storage; do not rely on it to protect the unit from impacts.

50How do I get HOOKUniq or its built-in battery serviced or repaired?

Contact HOOK for an assessment. Only HOOK-authorised service personnel should service or repair the built-in battery, motor, controller or internal wiring.

There are no user-serviceable parts inside HOOKUniq. Do not open the housing, attempt internal repairs yourself or have an unauthorised technician carry them out. Unauthorised servicing may invalidate your warranty.

51What is the minimum age to use HOOKUniq?

The minimum rider age is 16 years. Riders must be able to control the bicycle safely and follow the operating instructions. Younger children must not operate the throttle or play with the unit, charger or packaging.

52What should I do if HOOKUniq won't turn on?

First, check whether the battery needs charging. Follow the owner's manual for charging and temperature guidance, and use only the supplied charger or a HOOK-approved replacement. Do not charge a wet or damaged unit. If HOOKUniq still will not turn on, contact HOOK support.

53Why is the HOOKUniq thumb throttle not responding?

The throttle does not work from a standstill, so start by pedalling. If it still does not respond while you are pedalling, stop safely and check the wireless module connection, throttle cable and battery level. Restart and try again. Contact HOOK if the problem continues.

54Why does assistance feel weak or battery range seem lower?

Check the assist mode, battery charge, tyre pressure, roller alignment, clamp engagement and tyre or roller wear. Heavy loads, hills, frequent stops, cold conditions and wet tyres can reduce performance. Contact HOOK if the change is sudden or these checks do not help.

55Why won't the HOOK app connect to my kit?

Move your phone closer to HOOKUniq and check Bluetooth and the app's requested permissions. Unpair and pair again in the app. When switching to a smart-training app, follow the required disconnection and pairing sequence. Stop safely before troubleshooting; do not use your phone while riding.

56Why is the HOOKUniq battery not charging?

Check that the unit is in a dry area between 0°C and 45°C and the approved charger is connected correctly. Inspect the cable, plug and charging port for damage or moisture. Stop if you notice sparks, repeated interruptions or unusual heat. Do not try a generic charger; contact HOOK for help.

57What warranty does HOOKUniq come with?

HOOKUniq comes with a one-year warranty from the purchase date, covering manufacturing defects in the motor, built-in battery and the rest of the product. Claims are assessed by HOOK-authorised service personnel. This warranty does not restrict your consumer rights.

58Who pays for warranty repairs and shipping?

59What is not covered by the HOOKUniq warranty?

The warranty excludes accidents caused while riding, normal wear and tear, damage from unauthorised modifications or repairs, and damage caused by chargers other than the supplied charger or a HOOK-approved replacement. Warranty coverage applies only to units bought directly from HOOK or an authorised HOOK dealer.

60How do I make a HOOKUniq warranty claim?
